Built in the 1870’s, this building served as one of Peninsula’s Cheese Factories. The Cheese Factory was operated by Andrew Cassidy in the 1880’s. The milk would be collected from area farmers via the railroad and then turned into cheese at this factory. This cheese was shipped to surrounding communities via the railroad which ran right past the building. The building was remodeled into living quarters after the close of the cheese making era. This property was purchased by Robert Hunker and rehabilitated after it had fallen into disrepair. The building next to the Cheese Factory known as the Ice House, was used in support of the Cheese Factory’s operation, as a way to store ice for the cheese making process.
The Cheese Factory underwent another renovation in 2020 when the property was repurposed as an Airbnb by the Peninsula Foundation. This allows visitors the unique experience of staying in a “piece of history” during their vist to the area. This historic building, provides sweeping views of the Cuyahoga River and the downtown area. It sits close to the railroad tracks, creating a one of a kind experience when the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad runs through the Valley. Divided in an upper and lower unit, each can be rented seperately or together for families traveling together.
This property is also available to rent for longer stays and as part of our Artists in Residence program during the winter and early spring. Call our office at 330-657-2528 for details.
