DESCRIPTION:April 24th – Tony Trischka – Earl Jam\nTony Trischka has embarked on a musical journey through time\, unearthing a treasure trove of rare recordings featuring the legendary Earl Scruggs. The unexpected discovery came in the form of a thumb drive containing over 200 recordings of Scruggs jamming with John Hartford at private gatherings during the ’80s and ’90s. \nTrischka\, having studied Scruggs for over half a century\, delved into the collection\, transcribing new solos\, tones\, and tricks from the bluegrass icon. Inspired by this musical goldmine\, he showcased some of these pieces in an overview of Earl’s career at Joe’s Pub in New York City. John regularly performs solo\, in duos\, groups and has been the choice guitarist for the likes of Joan Baez\, Mary Chapin Carpenter\, Linda Thompson\, Jerry Douglas\, The Alt\, Usher’s Island\, Liz Carroll\, Eileen Ivers\, Tim O’Brien\, Michael McGoldrick and John McCusker\, Alison Brown\, Mick Moloney\, Kate Rusby and a host of other world class performers in America and abroad. \nJohn’s duo recording\, Double Play\, with the great Chicago fiddler and previous National Heritage Fellowship recipient\, Liz Carroll\, received a 2009 Grammy Nomination for Best Traditional World Album. Furnished with delicate banjo and spellbinding harmonies so close you often can’t tell their voices apart\, Frank & Mann deliver dynamic performances emboldened by the strength of their sincere songwriting. The duo have an uncommon ability to tastefully reference nostalgic sounds of American folk music while maintaining their own compelling style of artful and unpretentious lyricism. The strength and solitude one finds in the wilderness is a theme throughout their writing\, and they lovingly transport listeners to open landscapes in which to find comfort and ask the questions which we all have in common. \nWith roots in California and Oregon respectively\, Mann & Frank met as fellow fiddle players attending music camps and festivals growing up. DESCRIPTION:May 29th- Kim Richey – In January 2024\, Kim Richey found herself in Mexico\, gazing out at a sea of people singing along to “I’m Alright\,” one of her classic tracks. The three folks on stage with the veteran\, Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter were also raising their voices in harmony. To her right sat Brandi Carlile\, to her left\, Mary Chapin Carpenter\, and Brandy Clark. The formidable foursome was participating in a songwriter’s round only half-jokingly dubbed “Titans of Americana” at Carlile’s female-forward Girls Just Wanna Weekend festival on the Riviera Maya in Mexico. \n“That was nuts looking out and seeing everybody arm-waving and singing along\,” says Richey\, still both incredulous and cheered by the memory of performing with that supergroup and later appearing alongside other Girls Just Wanna Weekend-ers Annie Lennox\, Lucius\, Allison Russell\, and Sarah McLachlan among others. “It was just like\, ‘wow’!” \nThat voice\, which Brandi Carlile has cited as formative in crafting her own style\, is a widely sought after harmony instrument and has been featured on scores of albums including Jason Isbell’s acclaimed Southeastern\, Trisha Yearwood’s Everybody Knows\, Heartbreaker by Ryan Adams\, Reba McEntire’s Starting Over\, and Has Been by Capt. Kirk himself William Shatner\, among many others. Richey’s music continues to loiter at the Americana intersection of country\, folk\, pop\, and rock conjuring everything from Lucinda’s humanity\, the Beatles shimmer\, Tom Petty’s effervescent stomp and Joni Mitchell’s laser-sharp lyrical craft. \nFor now\, Richey only knows a few things for sure. One is it feels good to be considered a Titan — when peers like Carpenter\, spiritual heirs like Carlile and Clark\, and vocal acolytes like Isbell\, among many others\, sing her praises\, she says\, “It’s really nice. DESCRIPTION:June 5th – Showman and Coole – Through twenty years and a couple of thousand shows together in bands such as The Foggy Hogtown Boys and The Lonesome Ace Stringband\, John Showman and Chris Coole have developed a deep and instinctual musical bond. Their music lurks in a truly unique space that is somewhere on the outskirts of old-time\, bluegrass\, and folk. The songs of John Hartford\, Hank Williams\, Dock Boggs\, and The Band share space with the fiddle tunes of Eck Robertson and Ed Haley. On this offering\, their trademark four-part harmonies have matured in tone and sincerity\, their picking ferocious as ever. However\, it’s impossible to ensnare the Prowlers’ lifeblood in 45 minutes and 12 tracks. DESCRIPTION:July 15th – Charlie Parr \nIn the music of Charlie Parr\, there is a sincere conviction and earnest drive to create. The Minnesota-born guitarist\, songwriter\, and interpreter of traditional music has released 19 albums over two decades and has been known to perform up to 275 shows a year. Parr is a folk troubadour in the truest sense: taking to the road between shows\, writing and rewriting songs as he plays\, fueled by a belief that music is eternal and cannot be claimed or adequately explained. The bluesman poet pulls closely from the sights and sounds around him\, his lyrical craftsmanship built by his influences. The sounds from his working-class upbringing—including Folkways legends such as Lead Belly and Woody Guthrie—imbue Parr’s music with stylistic echoes of blues and folk icons of decades past. Parr sees himself merely as a continuer of a folk tradition: “I feel like I stand on a lot of big shoulders\,” he said in an interview. “I hope that I’ve brought a little bit of myself to the music.” \nParr’s first album with Smithsonian Folkways\, Last of Better Days Head (2021)\, foregrounded his lyrical craftsmanship and sophisticated bluesman confidence\, with spare production highlighting Parr’s mastery of guitar and elevating his poetry. Last of Better Days Ahead is a portrait of how Parr saw the world in that moment\, reflecting on time and memories that have past while holding an enduring desire to be present. In his 2024 release\, Little Sun\, Parr weaves together stories celebrating music\, community\, and communing with nature. DESCRIPTION:July 30th – East Nash Grass \nHow did East Nash Grass follow up their 2024 International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) award for Best New Artist? By earning a nomination for Entertainer of the Year\, IBMA’s highest honor\, in 2025\, and celebrating fiddler Maddie Denton’s win as Fiddler of the Year. In short\, East Nash Grass have quickly established themselves as the fresh new face of Nashville’s storied bluegrass tradition\, a supergroup of rising stars: Grand Master Fiddle champion Denton is joined by banjo player Cory Walker (banjo player on the five-time nominated “Carter & Cleveland” album this year\, among numerous accolades)\, 2022 IBMA Momentum Mandolin Player of the Year Harry Clark\, and charismatic frontman James Kee. This is an all-star band that harkens back to the sort of talent collected in the original Blue Grass Boys and a powerhouse leader of the next generation in bluegrass excellence. \nRolling Stone had them among the “best of what we saw” at RockyGrass in 2025\, praising their “rowdy set of high-octane bluegrass numbers\,” and noting\, “The group itself is a rapidly-rising force on the national touring scene.” \nAnd “rowdy” is right. They are far more than just a group of impressive instrumental technicians\, building on night after night of three-set gigs on Nashville’s East Side\, playing tiny stages for the love of it between tours backing bigger acts. It’s a hard-forged bond that translates into an infectious on-stage energy that audiences can’t seem to get enough of. \nWith their new release\, “All God’s Children” (Mountain Fever\, August 22\, 2025)\, they show a depth and feel\, too\, that goes well beyond the traditional bluegrass fair\, with nods to Gypsy jazz and East Village folk\, and eye toward moving bluegrass forward and keeping it from being too mired in the past.
