DESCRIPTION:March 14th- Heather Maloney’s “Soil in the Sky” is a collective memory. Maloney’s fourth full-length release is a collage of tremulous folk\, existential ballads\, and assertive rock. T \nThe Massachusetts-based “writer song-singer” found music in the midst of three years at a meditation center\, honing a sound moored in days of silent reflection and reverence for storytellers like Joni\, Rilke and Ken Burns. On “Soil in the Sky\,” she takes us to the midwest’s existential crisis\, a barstool scooching against fate\, a make-my-day reckoning with society’s old guard. \nIn sound and sentiment\, these 12 songs cover an immense amount of territory. But they’re all powered by the same source. There’s a spiritual thread throughout the record. That inspiration doesn’t necessarily come from above — Maloney has a patchwork metaphysical support system — but from all around: the glow of humanity gathered in the people and places that lap out in our wake. Heather has toured nationally as a headliner as well as in support of acts like Lake Street Dive\, Shakey Graves\, Gary Clark Jr.\, Colin Hay\, Mary Chapin Carpenter\, and many more. Growing up in Annapolis Maryland\, as a teenage rocker and student of jazz and music composition at Towson University\, he has become among the most innovative acoustic guitarists of the modern age. Surrounded by a family of bluegrass musicians and opening for American music luminaries such as David Bromberg and Tony Rice at an early age\, Tice found his musical center\, one which he now channels into a refreshing approach to songcraft. \nHaving occupied the roles of guitar ace\, sideman\, songwriter and student of American music for the better part of his life\, Jordan’s songs are enriching for all manner of listeners\, from guitar fanatics to more casual fans of Americana music; bending form and tradition through his singular approach\, he delivers performances that are not weighted by any one area of his prowess\, allowing listeners to join his world of candor\, wit and ineffable facility with comfort. Equally virtuosic as a flatpicker and fingerstylist\, and with a casual vocal style\, Tice conjures ingredients from seemingly far-flung worlds with ease that have earned him glowing press from such outlets as NPR Music and American Songwriter and taken him to stages such as the Telluride Bluegrass Festival and the Ryman Auditorium (among many many others). \nAs a side musician\, Jordan has worked with a great number of disparate artists\, including Andrew Marlin (Watchhouse)\, Steve Martin\, Aoife O’Donovan\, David Rawlings\, Tony Trischka\, Väsen\, and Yola. \nListening to the breadth of Jordan’s discography\, which includes seven projects as a solo artist and four as a founding member of the preeminent string band\, Hawktail (formerly Haas Kowert Tice)\, one will hear these sorts of abstractions at play in his own work. Equally virtuosic as a flatpicker and fingerstylist\, and with a casual vocal style\, Tice conjures ingredients from seemingly far-flung worlds with ease that have earned him glowing press from such outlets as NPR Music and American Songwriter and taken him to stages such as the Telluride Bluegrass Festival and the Ryman Auditorium (among many many others). \nOn his newest project\, Badlettsville\, Tice brings together an all-star ensemble of acoustic musicians to realize his take on several of his favorite covers and originals that\, while staples of his live show\, never made it on to a previous release. The EP begins with his acoustic treatment of Bob Dylan’s\, “Tryin’ to Get to Heaven\,” featuring impressionistic lyrics flowing over a trancelike backdrop of guitar\, fiddle\, bass and bongoes. The second track\, “Mean Old World\,” is an anthemic folk original reflecting on the inevitable change life brings\, featuring lush harmonies from Aoife O’Donovan and Andrew Marlin. DESCRIPTION:February 16th – Donna The Buffalo is not just a band\, rather one might say that Donna The Buffalo has become a lifestyle for its members and audiences. Since 1989\, the roots rockers have played thousands of shows and countless festivals including Bonnaroo\, Newport Folk Festival\, Telluride\, Austin City Limits Festival\, Merle Fest\, and Philadelphia Folk Festival. \nThey’ve opened for The Dead and have toured with Peter Rowan\, Del McCoury\, Los Lobos\, Little Feat\, Jim Lauderdale\, Rusted Root\, and Railroad Earth to name a few. They also toured with Ben & Jerry’s co-founder Ben Cohen to help raise awareness about increased corporate spending in politics. \nIn 1991\, the band started the Finger Lakes Grassroots Festival in Trumansburg\, NY. The four day festival has become an annual destination for over 15\,000 music lovers every year and was started as an AIDS benefit. It continues as a benefit for arts and education. To date\, the event has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars and is now one of three Grassroots Festivals; the Bi-annual Shakori Hills fest in North Carolina and Virginia Key festival in Florida. In 2016 GrassRoots Culture Camp was introduced in Trumansburg\, New York as four days of music\, art\, dance and movement workshops\, including nightly dinners and dances. Obviously a band that has used its voice to bring awareness and change. \nOne of the most dynamic bands to grace the G.A.R. Hall stage. Dust off those dancing shoes and get on down to the Hall. DESCRIPTION:January 17th – Missy Raines is a trailblazer in bluegrass. She is the most awarded bass player in the history of the International Bluegrass Music Association.She has received this honor more than any other bass player in the history of the organization. She is a bass players’ bass player\, a singer\, songwriter\, teacher\, sideman\, and bandleader. In addition to the Bass Player awards\, she’s received multiple awards from the IBMA for Recorded Event of the Year and Song of the Year. In 2019\, Missy was featured in The Country Music Hall of Fame as part of their American Currents exhibit. In January of 2020\, Missy debuted on the Grand Ole Opry with her band\, Allegheny. \nOn her new release HIGHLANDER\, Raines gives a tip of the hat to the region of West Virginia where she grew up and developed her deep passion for bluegrass music. DESCRIPTION:December 8th – Nic Gareiss and Allison de Groot sound and move together\, engaging tunes and gestures from Appalachia\, Ireland\, and beyond through banjo\, voice\, and percussive dance. Named one of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch\,” Nic Gareiss has been hailed by the New York Times for his “dexterous melding of Irish and Appalachian dance” and called “the most inventive and expressive step dancer on the scene” by the Boston Herald. A resident of Lansing\, Michigan\, Gareiss received the 2021 Michigan Heritage Award\, the state’s highest honor bestowed on traditional artists. Allison de Groot has performed at the Newport Folk Festival\, Celtic Connections\, Rockygrass\, Hardly Strictly\, Winnipeg Folk Festival\, and Tønder Festival. Shaped by the music scene in her hometown of Winnipeg\, Canada\, Allison also holds a Bachelor of Music in Performance from Berklee College of Music in Boston where she attended on the Slaight Family Scholarship\, and has been awarded the Joseph S. Stauffer Prize from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Eisenson Family Prize for Excellence in American Roots Music. Her album with Tatiana Hargreaves won Best Bluegrass Album from the Independent Music Awards and was nominated for Liner Notes of the Year at the International Bluegrass Music Association awards. \nAfter a decade of once-off collaborations\, Gareiss and de Groot released The Thrill\, a visual album inspired by the music of Appalachian musician Hobart Smith\, in October 2022. The duo spent concentrated time immersing themselves in archival recordings of Hobart Smith (1897-1965) to create The Thrill. “We listened in hopes of having a conversation with his music\,” Gareiss says\, “not attempting to replicate – which would be impossible! – but hoping for a discourse\, an argument\, a dialogue with his music.” The title itself comes from a quote from Hobart\, “music fills you with a thrill you just can’t express.” The Thrill can be purchased\, viewed\, and streamed on the platform Bandcamp. SUMMARY:Westbound Situation
DESCRIPTION:November 16th- Westbound Situation- Westbound Situation blends the precision of classical chamber music\, the rhythmic drive of bluegrass\, and the colorful expression of jazz into a new style of chamber music—chambergrass. The quartet—comprised of Grant Flick on violin\, Jake Howard on mandolin\, Zach Brown on cello\, and Jacob Warren on bass—mixes composition and improvisation seamlessly into their entirely memorized arrangements. \nThe group formed out of the Acoustic Music Seminar (AMS)\, a program run by multi-instrumentalist Mike Marshall. The program accepts 16 talented string players under the age of 22 from around the world to participate in a week of intense improvisation\, composition and performance training. All four were two time participants\, an honor that not everyone is able to receive. Some notable AMS alumni include Paul Kowert of the Punch Brothers\, Alex Hargreaves of Turtle Island String Quartet\, and Xavier Foley\, winner of the 2014 Sphinx Competition. \nWestbound Situation has a strong commitment to music education. The group’s combined experience in classical\, bluegrass\, jazz\, and original/improvised music is something not typically offered in the standard curriculum found at most schools and colleges (at least not all at the same time). These styles\, among others\, give each student the chance to make their own music\, and through this process valuable lessons in creativity\, listening\, and leadership are achieved.
