SUMMARY:Donna the Buffalo- come join the herd! The Nov 10th show has been re-scheduled to February 16th\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:February 16th – Donna The Buffalo is not just a band\, rather one might say that Donna The Buffalo has become a lifestyle for its members and audiences. Since 1989\, the roots rockers have played thousands of shows and countless festivals including Bonnaroo\, Newport Folk Festival\, Telluride\, Austin City Limits Festival\, Merle Fest\, and Philadelphia Folk Festival. \nThey’ve opened for The Dead and have toured with Peter Rowan\, Del McCoury\, Los Lobos\, Little Feat\, Jim Lauderdale\, Rusted Root\, and Railroad Earth to name a few. They also toured with Ben & Jerry’s co-founder Ben Cohen to help raise awareness about increased corporate spending in politics. \nIn 1991\, the band started the Finger Lakes Grassroots Festival in Trumansburg\, NY. The four day festival has become an annual destination for over 15\,000 music lovers every year and was started as an AIDS benefit. It continues as a benefit for arts and education. To date\, the event has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars and is now one of three Grassroots Festivals; the Bi-annual Shakori Hills fest in North Carolina and Virginia Key festival in Florida. In 2016 GrassRoots Culture Camp was introduced in Trumansburg\, New York as four days of music\, art\, dance and movement workshops\, including nightly dinners and dances. Obviously a band that has used its voice to bring awareness and change. \nOne of the most dynamic bands to grace the G.A.R. Hall stage. Dust off those dancing shoes and get on down to the Hall. You will love this Band and the experience they create! \nDoors open at 7:30/ Music at 8 \nReserved table for 4 – 250.00- located at the back of the room. Two tables can be joined for parties of 8 if purchased together \nStanding room only – 45.00 \nThere will be chairs set around the perimeter…but it will be hard to stay seated with Donna the Buffalo in the house!

SUMMARY:Nic Gareiss and Allison de Groot
DESCRIPTION:December 8th – Nic Gareiss and Allison de Groot sound and move together\, engaging tunes and gestures from Appalachia\, Ireland\, and beyond through banjo\, voice\, and percussive dance. Named one of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch\,” Nic Gareiss has been hailed by the New York Times for his “dexterous melding of Irish and Appalachian dance” and called “the most inventive and expressive step dancer on the scene” by the Boston Herald. A resident of Lansing\, Michigan\, Gareiss received the 2021 Michigan Heritage Award\, the state’s highest honor bestowed on traditional artists. Allison de Groot has performed at the Newport Folk Festival\, Celtic Connections\, Rockygrass\, Hardly Strictly\, Winnipeg Folk Festival\, and Tønder Festival. Shaped by the music scene in her hometown of Winnipeg\, Canada\, Allison also holds a Bachelor of Music in Performance from Berklee College of Music in Boston where she attended on the Slaight Family Scholarship\, and has been awarded the Joseph S. Stauffer Prize from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Eisenson Family Prize for Excellence in American Roots Music. Her album with Tatiana Hargreaves won Best Bluegrass Album from the Independent Music Awards and was nominated for Liner Notes of the Year at the International Bluegrass Music Association awards. \nAfter a decade of once-off collaborations\, Gareiss and de Groot released The Thrill\, a visual album inspired by the music of Appalachian musician Hobart Smith\, in October 2022. The duo spent concentrated time immersing themselves in archival recordings of Hobart Smith (1897-1965) to create The Thrill. “We listened in hopes of having a conversation with his music\,” Gareiss says\, “not attempting to replicate – which would be impossible! – but hoping for a discourse\, an argument\, a dialogue with his music.” The title itself comes from a quote from Hobart\, “music fills you with a thrill you just can’t express.” The Thrill can be purchased\, viewed\, and streamed on the platform Bandcamp. Fifty percent of the proceeds benefit Lonesome Pine Mutual Aid\, a Black\, Indigenous\, queer- and women-led organization which distributes flood relief including food\, drinking water\, and other community care across southwest Virginia where Hobart Smith lived and learned his music. \nGeneral Admission – 22.00\nBar area opens at 7pm\nDoors to Concert Hall opens at 7:30\nMusic at 8pm

SUMMARY:Amythyst Kiah
DESCRIPTION:November 24th- “Amythyst Kiah’s booming\, captivating voice\, and her haunting\, Southern gothic approach to Americana\, bluegrass\, and old-time set her apart from almost anyone else on the scene at this moment. Her reimagination of Dolly Parton’s magnum opus\, “Jolene\,” is a perfect example of how she carefully turns tradition on its ear. Based in East Tennessee herself\, she draws on the rich musical heritage of the region\, adding her own spin\, creating space to allow herself to soar. And there’s plenty more soaring in her future\, as she has opened shows for artists such as Rhiannon Giddens and Indigo Girls across the country and in Europe.” – Bluegrass Situation \n“Black Myself” GRAMMY nominated for Best Americana Roots Song \nFeatured in The New York Times – “Amythyst Kiah Found Her Powerful Voice. Now She Has a Sound to Match It.” \n“She really is important in reminding people that there is a great tradition of African-American\, old-time musicians. I love that she sings in this really rich low vocal range\, just straight from the chest\, resonant.” — NPR \n“Her razor-sharp guitar picking alone guarantees her a place among masters\, but it’s her deep-hued voice that can change on a dime from brushed steel to melted toffee that commands attention.” — The New York Times \nGeneral Admission- 32.00 \nMusic starts at 8pm\nDoors to Main Hall open at 7:30pm\nDoors to Lobby open at 7pm

SUMMARY:Westbound Situation
DESCRIPTION:November 16th- Westbound Situation- Westbound Situation blends the precision of classical chamber music\, the rhythmic drive of bluegrass\, and the colorful expression of jazz into a new style of chamber music—chambergrass. The quartet—comprised of Grant Flick on violin\, Jake Howard on mandolin\, Zach Brown on cello\, and Jacob Warren on bass—mixes composition and improvisation seamlessly into their entirely memorized arrangements. \nThe group formed out of the Acoustic Music Seminar (AMS)\, a program run by multi-instrumentalist Mike Marshall. The program accepts 16 talented string players under the age of 22 from around the world to participate in a week of intense improvisation\, composition and performance training. All four were two time participants\, an honor that not everyone is able to receive. Some notable AMS alumni include Paul Kowert of the Punch Brothers\, Alex Hargreaves of Turtle Island String Quartet\, and Xavier Foley\, winner of the 2014 Sphinx Competition. \nWestbound Situation has a strong commitment to music education. The group’s combined experience in classical\, bluegrass\, jazz\, and original/improvised music is something not typically offered in the standard curriculum found at most schools and colleges (at least not all at the same time). These styles\, among others\, give each student the chance to make their own music\, and through this process valuable lessons in creativity\, listening\, and leadership are achieved. Each member of the group maintains a private studio\, and all have been invited to provide workshops and masterclasses at schools and festivals across the country. \nWestbound Situation’s exciting and diverse concerts feature a set of unique original repertoire colored with recognizable standards from many genres. With bluegrass\, classical chamber music\, and jazz all coming together in the group’s concept of chambergrass\, a Westbound Situation concert is dazzling musical journey not soon forgotten. \nGeneral Admission- 23.00 \nLobby opens at 7pm\nDoors to Main Hall open at 7:30\nMusic at 8pm \nCasual attire\nLight snacks and refreshments can be purchased at the bar\nYou are welcome to bring in food.

SUMMARY:Tray Wellington Band
DESCRIPTION:November 14th- Tray Wellington– Banjo player Tray Wellington’s approach to the quintessential American instrument is all about looking forward. An International Bluegrass Music Association Award winner\, Wellington is critically acclaimed not only for his technical prowess\, but also for leveraging his unique point of view to craft a one-of-a-kind voice on the instrument. It’s a feat that’s all too rare in these roots genres that seem to value emulation and regurgitation over all else. Instead\, Wellington has time and time again reasserted that his playing style\, and all of the many varied and disparate parts that combine within it\, is wholly his own – and it’s unconcerned with tradition. \n$5.00 discount applied at check-out \nGeneral Admission: 25.00\nLobby doors open at 7pm\nDoors to the Main Hall open at 7:30pm\nMusic at 8pm

SUMMARY:Laura Cortese and the Dance Cards
DESCRIPTION:Laura Cortese might best be described as a sonic magpie: a curious and resourceful adventurer traversing great distances\, collecting melodies and rhythms that glitter like jewels in the sun. Driven by the gravitational pull of human connection\, her tendency towards exploration and collaboration have led her into countless niches\, each providing its own unique feather with which to decorate her distinct and ever-evolving sound. But all of these explorations have one thing in common: the power of strings. This may seem limiting to some. To her\, it is anything but. “Strings are at the core of what I do\,” she says. “Genre is secondary to that palate. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Laura Cortese and the Dance Cards create a stunning\, forward-looking sound that charts a path for innovation in folk music.— PopMatters\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStarting as a young child picking up the fiddle for the first time\, Cortese has used these strings to tie herself to others\, forging connections across age\, genre\, and identity. After a Californian childhood filled with Celtic music camps\, Cortese went on to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston and formed her first band\, Halali\, in 2000. \nHer early career explorations didn’t end with performance. Cortese also adopted the philosophy of learning by teaching\, co-founding a music camp from which to grow community and artistry. Alongside Shannon Heaton\, Cortese co-founded the Boston Celtic Music Festival in 2003\, which she describes as “kind of a thank you to the community that had nurtured me and that I grew up in.” To this day\, this festival celebrates and uplifts the deep Celtic folk music traditions that exist within Boston’s music scene\, honoring the shared repertoire and musical vocabulary of the artists that perform and jam there. Conversely\, in 2011\, she partnered with Kristin Andreassen to found Miles of Music Camp\, which brings together repertoire-based folk musicians with contemporary songwriters. The goal of this camp is not only to introduce these diverse musicians to new genres and musical catalogs\, but to build community and spark creativity. “The two groups are in awe of each other and they start to work together\,” notes Cortese\, describing the unique magic that is found among the attendees and instructors at Miles of Music camps\, “They find their own connections.” \nAll of these threads have joined together\, culminating in her work leading the musicians’ collective known as Laura Cortese & the Dance Cards. Here\, she showcases all of her varied experience and expertise–as a master fiddler\, an instructor\, a leader\, and a musical collaborator–using it to craft a new sound from whole cloth: a nearly symphonic hybrid of countless traditions and influences\, full of layered vocal harmonies and rich interplays of virtuosic string instrumentation. \nLaura Cortese has built a career weaving together a musical tapestry as diverse as it is masterful\, highlighted with experiences like playing the Newport Folk Festival with Pete Seeger in 2009\, standing onstage at the iconic Carnegie Hall in New York with Band of Horses in 2009\, and a stint touring alongside Uncle Earl in 2007. She has recorded with artists ranging from Aoife O’Donovan and Brittany Haas to Tao Rodriguez Seeger and Session Americana\, and has released 7 albums under her own name. She has toured across the globe\, acting as an ambassador of American music on behalf of the US State Department by performing and teaching in India\, Kazakhstan\, Uzbekistan\, Bangladesh\, Estonia\, Greece\, Ukraine\, and Montenegro. Now\, she holds space and builds community for musicians in Belgium as the co-founder of the monthly Bright Lights Session in Ghent. As always\, her vision is as expansive as her background. “We’re working to basically write a new folk tradition\,” she says. Were it anyone else\, you’d think it impossible. But with Laura Cortese at the helm? It just might come true.

SUMMARY:Wood Box Heroes - This event is SOLD OUT!
DESCRIPTION:Wood Box Heroes\, the American acoustic super-group\, is hardly anything like the bluegrass music you used to find in the cassette player of your grandad’s old chevy pickup truck. Deeply rooted in tradition while melding together an eclectic-array of sounds from the country\, bluegrass\, blues\, jazz\, rock\, and classical varieties\, paired with crafty and authentic songwriting\, the band delivers a piercing listening experience that plunges deep into the caverns of the soul. \nBringing together some of the world’s most highly lauded musicians in Matt Menefee(banjo-Mumford & Sons\, Cadillac Sky\, Warren Haynes)\,  and Barry Bales (bass-Alison Krauss & Union Station) backing up the vocal magic of Jenee Fleenor (fiddle-Blake Shelton\, Larry Cordle) and Josh Martin (singer/songwriter/guitarist)\, this unit has over a century of musical seasoning between them. Yet\, it is quite astonishing that the years spent on separate roads\, accompanying a spectrum of incredible artists and receiving some of the most sought-after honors and awards in the business\, has led to this enigmatic musical intersection. \nGeneral Admission:45.00\nDoors open at 7:30/Musivc at 8pm

SUMMARY:Legendary artist Peter Rowan returns to the G.A.R. Hall on October 18th
DESCRIPTION:  \nOctober 18th – Grammy-award winner and member of the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame Peter Rowan is a singer-songwriter with a career spanning over five decades. From his early years playing under the tutelage of Bluegrass veteran Bill Monroe\, to his time in Old & In the Way and his breakout as a solo musician and bandleader\, Rowan has built a devoted\, international fan base through a solid stream of recordings\, collaborative projects\, and constant touring. \nBorn in Wayland\, Massachusetts to a musical family\, Rowan learned to play guitar from his uncle. He spent his teenage years absorbing the sights and sounds of the Hillbilly Ranch\, a legendary Country music nightclub in Boston frequented by old-time acts like The Lilly Brothers and Tex Logan. In 1956 Peter Rowan formed his first band\, the Cupids\, while still in high school. After three years in college\, Rowan left academia to pursue a life in music. Rowan began his professional career in 1963 as the singer\, rhythm guitarist and songwriter for the Bluegrass Boys\, led by the founding father of bluegrass\, Bill Monroe. “One thing I started to like about the Monroe style wasthat there was a lot more blues in it than other styles of bluegrass\,” reflects Rowan. “It was darker. It had more of an edge to it. And yet it still had the ballad tradition in it\, and I loved that.” \nThe late ‘60s and early 70’s saw Rowan involved in a number of rock\, folk and bluegrass projects\, including Earth Opera\, Sea Train\, Muleskinner\, and the Rowans\, where he played alongside brothers Chris and Lorin Rowan. After the Rowan Brothers disbanded\, Rowan\, David Grisman\, Jerry Garcia\,Vassar Clements and John Kahn formed a bluegrass band christened Old & In the Way. It was during this incarnation that Rowan penned the song “Panama Red\,” a subsequent hit for the New Riders of the Purple Sage and a classic ever since. \nRowan subsequently embarked on a well-received solo career in the late ‘70s\, releasing critically acclaimed records such as Dustbowl Children (a Woody-Guthrie style song cycle about the Great Depression)\, Yonder (a record of old-time country music in collaboration with ace dobro player\, Jerry Douglas) and two extraordinarily fine bluegrass albums\, The First Whippoorwill and Bluegrass Boy\, as well as High Lonesome Cowboy\, a recording of traditional and old-time mountain music with Don Edwards and Norman Blake. Rowan’s recent releases- Quartet\, a recording with the phenomenal Tony Rice and Legacy with the Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band\, coupled with a relentless touring schedule have further endeared Peter Rowan to audiences around the world. \nGeneral Admission: 40.00 \nDoors open at 7:30/Music at 8pm

SUMMARY:Stillhouse Junkies
DESCRIPTION:October 17th- Stillhouse Junkies- A crowd-thrilling trio from the hills of Colorado\, Stillhouse Junkies share the kind of strangely charmed chemistry that elevates both artist and audience alike. \nSince forming in 2017\, the Durango-bred band has offered up a hypnotic and high-energy form of roots music anchored in the free-flowing interplay among the three lifelong musicians (Fred Kosak on guitar and mandolin\, Matt Thomas on upright bass\, Alissa Wolf on fiddle). While they’ve gained major traction in the bluegrass world in recent years—including winning the IBMA Momentum Band of the Year award in 2021—Stillhouse Junkies ultimately inhabit a genre-blurring and subtly inventive sound informed by everything from blues to classical to Texas swing. When matched with their nuanced songcraft and soul-stirring harmonies\, the result is a one-of-a-kind musical experience. \nAlways a good night of music when the Stillhouse Junkies are on stage! \nGeneral Admission- 25.00 \nDoors open at 7:30/Music at 8pm
