SUMMARY:Westbound Situation
DESCRIPTION:November 16th- Westbound Situation- Westbound Situation blends the precision of classical chamber music\, the rhythmic drive of bluegrass\, and the colorful expression of jazz into a new style of chamber music—chambergrass. The quartet—comprised of Grant Flick on violin\, Jake Howard on mandolin\, Zach Brown on cello\, and Jacob Warren on bass—mixes composition and improvisation seamlessly into their entirely memorized arrangements. \nThe group formed out of the Acoustic Music Seminar (AMS)\, a program run by multi-instrumentalist Mike Marshall. The program accepts 16 talented string players under the age of 22 from around the world to participate in a week of intense improvisation\, composition and performance training. All four were two time participants\, an honor that not everyone is able to receive. Some notable AMS alumni include Paul Kowert of the Punch Brothers\, Alex Hargreaves of Turtle Island String Quartet\, and Xavier Foley\, winner of the 2014 Sphinx Competition. \nWestbound Situation has a strong commitment to music education. The group’s combined experience in classical\, bluegrass\, jazz\, and original/improvised music is something not typically offered in the standard curriculum found at most schools and colleges (at least not all at the same time). These styles\, among others\, give each student the chance to make their own music\, and through this process valuable lessons in creativity\, listening\, and leadership are achieved. Each member of the group maintains a private studio\, and all have been invited to provide workshops and masterclasses at schools and festivals across the country. \nWestbound Situation’s exciting and diverse concerts feature a set of unique original repertoire colored with recognizable standards from many genres. With bluegrass\, classical chamber music\, and jazz all coming together in the group’s concept of chambergrass\, a Westbound Situation concert is dazzling musical journey not soon forgotten. \nGeneral Admission- 23.00 \nLobby opens at 7pm\nDoors to Main Hall open at 7:30\nMusic at 8pm \nCasual attire\nLight snacks and refreshments can be purchased at the bar\nYou are welcome to bring in food.

SUMMARY:Tray Wellington Band
DESCRIPTION:November 14th- Tray Wellington– Banjo player Tray Wellington’s approach to the quintessential American instrument is all about looking forward. An International Bluegrass Music Association Award winner\, Wellington is critically acclaimed not only for his technical prowess\, but also for leveraging his unique point of view to craft a one-of-a-kind voice on the instrument. It’s a feat that’s all too rare in these roots genres that seem to value emulation and regurgitation over all else. Instead\, Wellington has time and time again reasserted that his playing style\, and all of the many varied and disparate parts that combine within it\, is wholly his own – and it’s unconcerned with tradition. \n$5.00 discount applied at check-out \nGeneral Admission: 25.00\nLobby doors open at 7pm\nDoors to the Main Hall open at 7:30pm\nMusic at 8pm

SUMMARY:Laura Cortese and the Dance Cards
DESCRIPTION:Laura Cortese might best be described as a sonic magpie: a curious and resourceful adventurer traversing great distances\, collecting melodies and rhythms that glitter like jewels in the sun. Driven by the gravitational pull of human connection\, her tendency towards exploration and collaboration have led her into countless niches\, each providing its own unique feather with which to decorate her distinct and ever-evolving sound. But all of these explorations have one thing in common: the power of strings. This may seem limiting to some. To her\, it is anything but. “Strings are at the core of what I do\,” she says. “Genre is secondary to that palate. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Laura Cortese and the Dance Cards create a stunning\, forward-looking sound that charts a path for innovation in folk music.— PopMatters\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStarting as a young child picking up the fiddle for the first time\, Cortese has used these strings to tie herself to others\, forging connections across age\, genre\, and identity. After a Californian childhood filled with Celtic music camps\, Cortese went on to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston and formed her first band\, Halali\, in 2000. \nHer early career explorations didn’t end with performance. Cortese also adopted the philosophy of learning by teaching\, co-founding a music camp from which to grow community and artistry. Alongside Shannon Heaton\, Cortese co-founded the Boston Celtic Music Festival in 2003\, which she describes as “kind of a thank you to the community that had nurtured me and that I grew up in.” To this day\, this festival celebrates and uplifts the deep Celtic folk music traditions that exist within Boston’s music scene\, honoring the shared repertoire and musical vocabulary of the artists that perform and jam there. Conversely\, in 2011\, she partnered with Kristin Andreassen to found Miles of Music Camp\, which brings together repertoire-based folk musicians with contemporary songwriters. The goal of this camp is not only to introduce these diverse musicians to new genres and musical catalogs\, but to build community and spark creativity. “The two groups are in awe of each other and they start to work together\,” notes Cortese\, describing the unique magic that is found among the attendees and instructors at Miles of Music camps\, “They find their own connections.” \nAll of these threads have joined together\, culminating in her work leading the musicians’ collective known as Laura Cortese & the Dance Cards. Here\, she showcases all of her varied experience and expertise–as a master fiddler\, an instructor\, a leader\, and a musical collaborator–using it to craft a new sound from whole cloth: a nearly symphonic hybrid of countless traditions and influences\, full of layered vocal harmonies and rich interplays of virtuosic string instrumentation. \nLaura Cortese has built a career weaving together a musical tapestry as diverse as it is masterful\, highlighted with experiences like playing the Newport Folk Festival with Pete Seeger in 2009\, standing onstage at the iconic Carnegie Hall in New York with Band of Horses in 2009\, and a stint touring alongside Uncle Earl in 2007. She has recorded with artists ranging from Aoife O’Donovan and Brittany Haas to Tao Rodriguez Seeger and Session Americana\, and has released 7 albums under her own name. She has toured across the globe\, acting as an ambassador of American music on behalf of the US State Department by performing and teaching in India\, Kazakhstan\, Uzbekistan\, Bangladesh\, Estonia\, Greece\, Ukraine\, and Montenegro. Now\, she holds space and builds community for musicians in Belgium as the co-founder of the monthly Bright Lights Session in Ghent. As always\, her vision is as expansive as her background. “We’re working to basically write a new folk tradition\,” she says. Were it anyone else\, you’d think it impossible. But with Laura Cortese at the helm? It just might come true.

SUMMARY:Wood Box Heroes - This event is SOLD OUT!
DESCRIPTION:Wood Box Heroes\, the American acoustic super-group\, is hardly anything like the bluegrass music you used to find in the cassette player of your grandad’s old chevy pickup truck. Deeply rooted in tradition while melding together an eclectic-array of sounds from the country\, bluegrass\, blues\, jazz\, rock\, and classical varieties\, paired with crafty and authentic songwriting\, the band delivers a piercing listening experience that plunges deep into the caverns of the soul. \nBringing together some of the world’s most highly lauded musicians in Matt Menefee(banjo-Mumford & Sons\, Cadillac Sky\, Warren Haynes)\,  and Barry Bales (bass-Alison Krauss & Union Station) backing up the vocal magic of Jenee Fleenor (fiddle-Blake Shelton\, Larry Cordle) and Josh Martin (singer/songwriter/guitarist)\, this unit has over a century of musical seasoning between them. Yet\, it is quite astonishing that the years spent on separate roads\, accompanying a spectrum of incredible artists and receiving some of the most sought-after honors and awards in the business\, has led to this enigmatic musical intersection. \nGeneral Admission:45.00\nDoors open at 7:30/Musivc at 8pm

SUMMARY:Legendary artist Peter Rowan returns to the G.A.R. Hall on October 18th
DESCRIPTION:  \nOctober 18th – Grammy-award winner and member of the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame Peter Rowan is a singer-songwriter with a career spanning over five decades. From his early years playing under the tutelage of Bluegrass veteran Bill Monroe\, to his time in Old & In the Way and his breakout as a solo musician and bandleader\, Rowan has built a devoted\, international fan base through a solid stream of recordings\, collaborative projects\, and constant touring. \nBorn in Wayland\, Massachusetts to a musical family\, Rowan learned to play guitar from his uncle. He spent his teenage years absorbing the sights and sounds of the Hillbilly Ranch\, a legendary Country music nightclub in Boston frequented by old-time acts like The Lilly Brothers and Tex Logan. In 1956 Peter Rowan formed his first band\, the Cupids\, while still in high school. After three years in college\, Rowan left academia to pursue a life in music. Rowan began his professional career in 1963 as the singer\, rhythm guitarist and songwriter for the Bluegrass Boys\, led by the founding father of bluegrass\, Bill Monroe. “One thing I started to like about the Monroe style wasthat there was a lot more blues in it than other styles of bluegrass\,” reflects Rowan. “It was darker. It had more of an edge to it. And yet it still had the ballad tradition in it\, and I loved that.” \nThe late ‘60s and early 70’s saw Rowan involved in a number of rock\, folk and bluegrass projects\, including Earth Opera\, Sea Train\, Muleskinner\, and the Rowans\, where he played alongside brothers Chris and Lorin Rowan. After the Rowan Brothers disbanded\, Rowan\, David Grisman\, Jerry Garcia\,Vassar Clements and John Kahn formed a bluegrass band christened Old & In the Way. It was during this incarnation that Rowan penned the song “Panama Red\,” a subsequent hit for the New Riders of the Purple Sage and a classic ever since. \nRowan subsequently embarked on a well-received solo career in the late ‘70s\, releasing critically acclaimed records such as Dustbowl Children (a Woody-Guthrie style song cycle about the Great Depression)\, Yonder (a record of old-time country music in collaboration with ace dobro player\, Jerry Douglas) and two extraordinarily fine bluegrass albums\, The First Whippoorwill and Bluegrass Boy\, as well as High Lonesome Cowboy\, a recording of traditional and old-time mountain music with Don Edwards and Norman Blake. Rowan’s recent releases- Quartet\, a recording with the phenomenal Tony Rice and Legacy with the Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band\, coupled with a relentless touring schedule have further endeared Peter Rowan to audiences around the world. \nGeneral Admission: 40.00 \nDoors open at 7:30/Music at 8pm

SUMMARY:Stillhouse Junkies
DESCRIPTION:October 17th- Stillhouse Junkies- A crowd-thrilling trio from the hills of Colorado\, Stillhouse Junkies share the kind of strangely charmed chemistry that elevates both artist and audience alike. \nSince forming in 2017\, the Durango-bred band has offered up a hypnotic and high-energy form of roots music anchored in the free-flowing interplay among the three lifelong musicians (Fred Kosak on guitar and mandolin\, Matt Thomas on upright bass\, Alissa Wolf on fiddle). While they’ve gained major traction in the bluegrass world in recent years—including winning the IBMA Momentum Band of the Year award in 2021—Stillhouse Junkies ultimately inhabit a genre-blurring and subtly inventive sound informed by everything from blues to classical to Texas swing. When matched with their nuanced songcraft and soul-stirring harmonies\, the result is a one-of-a-kind musical experience. \nAlways a good night of music when the Stillhouse Junkies are on stage! \nGeneral Admission- 25.00 \nDoors open at 7:30/Music at 8pm

SUMMARY:The Numbers Band
DESCRIPTION:October 12th – 15 60 75 The Numbers Band has been praised by almost every national music publication and several international publications since the beginning of their 50 years of live performances and recordings. Many fans are under the impression that the band remains obscure by choice. In fact\, they have never been offered a contract from any recording company in the industry\, ever. The music “cannot be categorized”\, “cannot be defined”\, “is too original”.  The music industry is not about music anymore. It is about selling products the public can relate to. After all\, it is a business. Even “alternative” music has become a label. The founder of the band\, Robert Kidney\, explains\, “The music industry\, the media\, and the tellsusourvision (TV) are defining for the American public what is good music by only playing and supporting what is profitable. We are taught to disregard everything that is not familiar. We (The Numbers Band) give the people our best. Our effort goes into being creative\, unique and original. We define our own sound. There are no rules because we don’t play the game. We are not in it for the game\, we’re in it for the music. \nIf you grew up in NE Ohio\, you have likely seen The Numbers Band. The Kidney Brothers\, Robert and Jack have been making music together for 50 years.  Their music is original\, creative and undefinable\, maybe a little jazz\, a little blues\, rock-n-roll…The Numbers Band. \nGeneral Admission – 15.00 \nDoors open at 7:30/Music at 8

SUMMARY:Kim Richey
DESCRIPTION:n January 2024\, Kim Richey found herself in Mexico\, gazing out at a sea of people singing along to “I’m Alright\,” one of her classic tracks. The three folks on stage with the veteran\, Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter were also raising their voices in harmony. To her right sat Brandi Carlile\, to her left\, Mary Chapin Carpenter\, and Brandy Clark. The formidable foursome was participating in a songwriter’s round only half-jokingly dubbed “Titans of Americana” at Carlile’s female-forward Girls Just Wanna Weekend festival on the Riviera Maya in Mexico. \n“That was nuts looking out and seeing everybody arm-waving and singing along\,” says Richey\, still both incredulous and cheered by the memory of performing with that supergroup and later appearing alongside other Girls Just Wanna Weekend-ers Annie Lennox\, Lucius\, Allison Russell\, and Sarah McLachlan among others. “It was just like\, ‘wow’!” \nThe good news for fans of this particular Titan is there will soon be a whole new batch of songs to sing along with and arm wave to with the forthcoming release of her 10th studio album Every New Beginning. \nThe songs represent the full spectrum of the Ohio native’s gifts as both a revered songwriter who can leap from melancholy to mirthful in a single couplet — whose songs have been recorded by the likes of Brooks and Dunn\, Patty Loveless\, and Mary Chapin Carpenter — and owner of one of music’s truly celestial voices. \nThat voice\, which Brandi Carlile has cited as formative in crafting her own style\, is a widely sought after harmony instrument and has been featured on scores of albums including Jason Isbell’s acclaimed Southeastern\, Trisha Yearwood’s Everybody Knows\, Heartbreaker by Ryan Adams\, Reba McEntire’s Starting Over\, and Has Been by Capt. Kirk himself William Shatner\, among many others.  Richey’s music continues to loiter at the Americana intersection of country\, folk\, pop\, and rock conjuring everything from Lucinda’s humanity\, the Beatles shimmer\, Tom Petty’s effervescent stomp and Joni Mitchell’s laser-sharp lyrical craft. \nFor now\, Richey only knows a few things for sure. One is it feels good to be considered a Titan — when peers like Carpenter\, spiritual heirs like Carlile and Clark\, and vocal acolytes like Isbell\, among many others\, sing her praises\, she says\, “It’s really nice. You can’t beat it\, really.” The other is that with Every New Beginning Richey is still striving for the same goal she had at the beginning of her own musical life: “Whenever I write a song\, the thing that I enjoy the most is when someone hears a song or a line and says\, ‘That’s how I feel.’”  As long as the music is connecting\, there is no end.

SUMMARY:Paul Kovac's Big Grass Band
DESCRIPTION:November 9th – Paul Kovac’s Big Grass Band – Paul Kovac caught the Bluegrass bug while in his teens\, learning to play banjo\, guitar & mandolin\, and quickly joined bands in an effort to ‘earn-while-you-learn’. Over the year’s\, Paul’s performed with Bill Monroe\, Chubby Wise\, Mac Wiseman\, Vassar Clements\, and countless others. These experiences have been the bedrock of his Bluegrass foundation. \nThe Big ‘Grass Band is made up of seasoned players with decades of experience successfully presenting Bluegrass music to audiences. Suitable for those knowledgeable about Bluegrass and to folks hearing Bluegrass for the very first time. \nThe Big ‘Grass Band is Paul’s return to Bluegrass\, flanked by premier like-minded musicians\, making Paul’s original songs come to life. SUMMARY:Appalachian Women Speak
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special afternoon of Poetry as we present “I thought I heard a cardinal sing”\, part of the Women of Appalachia Project\, headed by Ohio’s Poet Laureate\, Kari Gunther-Seymour. This antholoy focuses on the unique culture of Ohio’s Appalachian population. \nA lavish mix of voices—Affrilachian\, Indigenous\, non-binary and LGBTQ; from teens to those creatively aging; poets in recovery\, some differently-abled or with developmental differences; emerging and well established; some living in the state\, others from assorted locations throughout the country—all with a deep connection to Appalachian Ohio. \nMany people have an image of an Appalachian\, and they look down on them\, unaware of the strength of their rich heritage\, strong sense of honor and love of the land. Mainstream media has rarely been kind to Appalachia. This anthology is a testament to the intricacies of family\, ancestry and cultural heritage of Ohio Appalachians and most importantly that one single story cannot possibly describe a region or its people. \nDon’t miss joining us for this special poetry event.  We will have music and light snacks.  Donations are appreciated. \nThanks to Peninsula’s favorite poet\, Renay Sanders for keeping poetry alive in the Valley!

SUMMARY:New Soft Shoe

As a result\, the group plays tunes from the International Submarine Band\, the Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers. It also plays songs from Parsons solo records GP and Grievous Angel. The band has performed at the Gram Parsons Guitar Pull in Waycross\, GA\, and at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame here in Cleveland. \nAlways fun\, loyal fans\, great music!!  Special Guest Rachel Brown will be playing with the boys!! \nGeneral Admission-15.00 \nDoors open at 7:30/Music at 8pm

SUMMARY:Driftwood
DESCRIPTION:Music has guided Driftwood to hallowed ground many times since its founding members\, Joe Kollar and Dan Forsyth\, started making music as high schoolers in Joe’s parents’ basement. Whether the Upstate New York folk rock group—which today also includes violinist Claire Byrne\, bassist Joey Arcuri\, and drummer Sam Fishman—are converting new fans on a hardscrabble tour across the country or playing to a devoted crowd at hero Levon Helm’s Woodstock barn\, the band’s shapeshifting approach to folk music continues to break new ground. \n“Driftwood is basically a beautiful friendship that happens to play music together\,” says Joe. “I know it’s rare. I know I’m lucky to know these people and lean on them and go through these massive life changes together.” For Driftwood\, each song is like a journal entry: cathartic to create\, yes\, but capable of unlocking new lessons—and when shared—forging new bonds. “We’re communal\, right? Humans need to be connected\,” Joe says. “And we get to have this special thing.” \nTHIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT!!  Thank you to everyone who purchased tickets in advance.    Thank you and see you at the Hall!!

SUMMARY:Cold Chocolate
DESCRIPTION:Cold Chocolate is a genre-bending Americana band that fuses folk\, funk and bluegrass to create a unique sound all their own. Led by Ethan Robbins (vocals/guitar/mandolin) and Ariel Bernstein (vocals/percussion/banjo)\, the Boston-based duo released their fifth full-length album in the fall of 2023 .\n\nPunctuated by tight harmonies and skillful musicianship\, Cold Chocolate has quickly gained recognition for their original music and high-energy shows. The band has shared bills with Leftover Salmon\, David Grisman\, and Angelique Kidjo \, and regularly performs at venues and music festivals across the country.\n\nRobbins began his bluegrass career at Oberlin College\, where he started to explore how this hard-driving fast-paced genre could be stretched. A classical violinist from age four\, he fell in love with the guitar when he turned fourteen. In 2012\, Robbins met percussionist Bernstein at a mutual friend’s gig in Boston. Like Robbins\, Bernstein also studied classical percussion in college before moving to the drum set. A master of restraint\, the loose-wristed Bernstein brings a light and tasteful groove to Cold Chocolate’s tunes\, filling out their sound and heightening the band’s live energy.\n\nGeneral Admission-$22.00\nDoors open at 7:30/Music at 8pm
